Football He discussed Guardiola, Mourinho and Klopp
Xabi Alonso has worked with some incredible coaches during his career and he has discussed several of them, while also singling out Jurgen Klopp for praise.
Asked which coach would deserve a hypothetical Ballon d’Or for coaching, he had no doubts about saying it should go the Liverpool coach.
“He has charisma,” Alonso said of Klopp in an interview with L’Equipe.
“You see the relationship he has with his players at the end of matches.
“This strong emotional link also comes from the relationship he has wanted to create with the club.
“Having this is golden for a coach.
“Pep Guardiola also knows how to do this, just like Rafa Benitez and some others.”
The Real Sociedad B coach went on to explain the admiration he has for Zinedine Zidane, both for what he did as a player and for what he’s doing as a coach.
“I remember my first experiences as a professional and he levitated on the pitch,” he recalled.
“He was the first player of a different dimension who had an impact on me.
“He is an extraordinary example, on another level.
“To have won three Champions League titles in two and a half years as coach of Real Madrid… it all went to quick.
“I don’t intend to do things at that same pace.”
Alonso had further praise for Guardiola, who he worked with at Bayern Munich.
“Nobody knows football like he does,” Alonso said.
“He’s very intelligent and knows how to interpret teams and championships.
“When he starts to speak, it’s marvellous to listen to him.”
Jose Mourinho was another of the Spaniard’s coaches and he also discussed the current Tottenham boss.
“He made an impact on me for his reading of games and ability to react when necessary,” he said of Mourinho.
