LaLiga Santander – Barcelona At each other’s throats for years
Another derby and more controversy. With Gerard Pique and Espanyol, that has become commonplace.
The Barcelona centre-back was on Movistar’s programme ‘La Resistencia’ on Thursday night and poked fun at Espanyol‘s lack of finances.
For years, the rivalry between the player and Los Periquitos has been constant.
This rivalry started in September 2008 at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.
With 20 minutes to go, the Boixos Nois shot flares towards the Espanyol fans and Pique, along with other players, celebrated one of the Barcelona goals with the supporters.
That gesture outraged the home support and since then, he has found himself in the spotlight.
A Raul Tamudo brace at the Camp Nou caused Barcelona to lose a league title.
Pique was very aware of the fact and prior to a derby in February 2009, the defender insisted that the then bottom club didn’t worry him at all.
“Espanyol cost Barcelona a title two years ago with a draw at the Camp Nou and they were very happy in celebrating the goals,” he said.
“If they go down to Segunda [Division], they’ll get the same from me.”
This was undoubtedly a turning point in the tension between the teams.
A section of the Espanyol fans chanted about his partner Shakira in a 2014 fixture and it was an unfortunate incident that set a precedent for forthcoming games.
The Barcelona man remembered that episode in future controversies.
Since that episode in 2014, things have escalated.
After a 4-1 win in the first leg of a Copa del Rey clash at the Camp Nou, Pique remarked on the return game.
“They call themselves a wonderful minority and they are so much of a minority that they don’t even fit their stadium,” he said.
The ‘wonderful minority’ motto is one of Espanyol‘s slogans.
In April 2015, LaLiga picked up some of the insults of a section of Espanyol towards Pique during a Copa del Rey game at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
“In the 24th and 76th minutes, the target of the insults was the central defender of Barcelona,” the report read.
‘Pique, you b****rd, Shakira has a tail, your son is [Mubarak] Wakaso‘s and you are a faggot’.
“They are very creative at Espanyol,” Pique said this week when asked about those songs.
A section of Espanyol fans also exhibited offensive banners about Pique‘s other half.
“Shakira belongs to everyone,” they read.
In the mixed zone after a Copa del Rey game last year, he continued to refer to the opposition as ‘Espanyol of Cornella’ and not of Barcelona.
“They are from Cornella, right?” was his response when asked about it.
