The summer transfer market is starting to simmer, movements are beginning to take place, and money is starting to be thrown around.
In LaLiga Santander, Nelson Semedo is one player who could be on the move this summer, but he won’t be leaving Barcelona on the cheap.
Semedo isn’t the rightful owner of the right side of Barcelona‘s defence and, despite playing 46 games this season, he has shared the role with Sergi Roberto and appeared in 26 of the 38 LaLiga Santander games, while the Catalan has been given minutes in 29.
This has opened the door for clubs to declare an interest in the Portuguese, notably Atletico Madrid who need defensive reinforcements after moving on a number of their stalwarts, and Semedo himself has considered a Camp Nou exit.
His agents have been informed, and he wants to be an undisputed starter wherever he plays next season, but neither Ernesto Valverde nor Barcelona plan on him leaving this summer.
The club understandably want him to stay, but they haven’t completely shut the door on the idea of him departing.
However, if he is to go it will be at a cost.
In the summer of 2017 he arrived in Catalonia for 30 million euros, and now the Azulgrana are standing firm and demanding that any interested parties pay around half of his release clause of 100m euros.
Barcelona value him at 45m to 50m euros, and won’t be budging on their stance unless big money is put on the table.
Looking at other full-back transfers, Bayern Munich have paid 80m euros to Atletico for Lucas Hernandez, while Manchester City splashed 58m euros on Benjamin Mendy in 2017, as well as 56m euros on Kyle Walker.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are set to splash 50m euros themselves on Ferland Mendy.
These figures reflect the market at the moment and this, combined with the growth Semedo has made as a player since arriving, have the club setting his value at around 50m euros.
If Barcelona want to spend this summer, and they do, they know that sales are needed.
Atletico will have money to spend, so the Catalans will be holding out for a big-money offer.
