Barcelona Fans clamour for Xavi’s return as coach
Liverpool secured their place in the Champions League final at the expense of Barcelona, and the results of MARCA’s survey on who is to blame for the debacle are in.
Lionel Messi came in for early criticism in the aftermath of the defeat at Anfield, yet fans have spoken out on just who should take the majority of the blame for the second successive year of embarrassment in the Champions League.
34 percent of fans have deemed the players to be the guilty party, although closely behind them is a mixture of the players and Ernesto Valverde, with such an option taking 31 percent of the vote.
27 percent believe that the fault is solely at Valverde‘s door, along with his coaching staff, and there are calls for the former Athletic Club coach to be dismissed at the end of the season.
The question as to who should replace the Spaniard in an ideal world was also asked, and the results were largely mixed, despite the fact there was a clear winner. Xavi Hernandez secured 26 percent of the votes, although there is a danger that supporters are longing for a repeat of the Pep Guardiola experiment.
Erik ten Hag has impressed over the years with his coaching work at Bayern Munich‘s B team, and he was only 10 seconds away from guiding Ajax to their first Champions League final this millennium.
The Dutch coach received just 14 percent of the vote, whilst Liverpool‘s own Jurgen Klopp was just below Xavi with 22 percent.
Of the 23 players that make up the senior squad at the Camp Nou in the 2018/19 season, fans believe only 15 of them deserve to remain with the club.
MARCA.com readers have decided that a number of players must depart in the summer, starting with the 160 million euro man, Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian is joined by Jean-Clair Todibo, Jeison Murillo, Thomas Vermaelen, Rafinha Alcantara, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Malcom.
Barcelona are believed to be disappointed with Coutinho‘s performances since his arrival, but it’s difficult to see a legitimate destination for the former Liverpool playmaker this summer.
Of all the positions at Barcelona, the supporters feel most at ease with the goalkeeping situation, although Jasper Cillessen is expected to leave this summer, while a whopping 80 percent of people thought that the defence and attack need to be strengthened.
