Real Madrid Zidane has a lot to watch
Real Madrid‘s pre-season is already underway and with five new arrivals working under Zinedine Zidane‘s orders in Montreal, there’s a new sense of competition around the squad as places are up for grabs.
One of the biggest debates last season started with the European Super Cup defeat and it surrounded Marcelo‘s place in the starting XI. From then, his season was troubled and his position was compromised. His presence at the club now is largely thanks to Zidane‘s return, but Ferland Mendy‘s arrival puts his status in doubt again.
After a frustrating loan spell at Leganes last season, Andriy Lunin is enjoying his second pre-season at Madrid after being key in Ukraine‘s U-20 World Cup triumph in Poland. After Luca Zidane‘s exit and with questions still hanging over Keylor Navas‘ future, the Ukrainian needs to convince Zidane that he can be the second choice.
Karim Benzema was head and shoulders above anyone else at Madrid last season and his 30 goals presented a glimmer of light in an otherwise dark campaign. For Zidane he is untouchable, but he knows that he has to work to repeat last season’s form.
Mariano Diaz looks nothing like his Lyon self and Jovic is in to provide competition for the Frenchman, or maybe play alongside him.
The Serbian knows Mariano won’t make it easy for him, though, and they’ll battle from the first minute.
