Real Madrid Played together in 2015/16
Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is convinced that Sadio Mane would be a great success if he joined Real Madrid, who have been linked with the Liverpool winger since the return of Zinedine Zidane as head coach.
Romeu and Mane played a total of 30 games together for Saints in the club’s best season in the Premier League era, in 2015/16, under the guidance of Ronald Koeman. It was off the back of this campaign that Mane earned a 41 million euro move to Liverpool after scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists.
“What I would highlight, above all, is his speed,” said Romeu.
“He is a very electric and dizzying player. He has exceptional physical and technical qualities.
“At Liverpool he’s grown a lot. This season he’s enjoying his best season in front of goal. I think he’s acquired calmness and composure when finishes moves, either scoring [himself] or assisting. That is key.”
Romeu, who made his debut with Barcelona, is convinced that Mane would be a success at Madrid, though he did emphasise that the Senegalese forward will not bring the same level of goals as Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Yes, he is prepared [to make the jump to playing for Real Madrid],” Romeu responded when asked if Mane has the quality to play for Los Blancos.
“Madrid are a little weak in attack and he’s the type of player that does a lot of damage in open spaces. He could help them reverse their current situation.
“He brings variation in attack, but he’s not a prolific goalscorer like Cristiano Ronaldo, who goes well above [what a forward brings to the team].”
