LaLiga The Portuguese is Atleti’s record signing
Jose Mourinho believes that Joao Felix is under pressure to deliver at Atletico Madrid and that his tender age is no excuse for not doing so.
The Portuguese forward became the club’s most expensive signing after leaving Benfica for 126 million euros.
Felix‘s compatriot, Mourinho, who is currently out of managerial work, says the huge price paid by Los Rojiblancos is something the 19-year-old can’t hide away from.
“He has a challenge due to the extent of his talent and because of the investment the club have made on him”, Mourinho told the Portuguese Football Association‘s television channel.
“I believe that he can’t escape this responsibility. It doesn’t matter if he’s 18, 20 or 25.
“What matters is his talent and the responsibility he has.”
Felix shone for Diego Simeone‘s new-look side in pre-season, with Atleti having made a number of additions after losing the likes of Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Rodri this summer.
Atleti finished second in LaLiga Santander last season, 11 points behind Barcelona, and they are looking to close the gap this time around.
“Atletico Madrid‘s level of investment leaves them with responsibility to fight for the Champions League and LaLiga,” Mourinho said.
“It’s clear that Barcelona and Real Madrid have to be there because of their power, financial capability, culture and quality.
“Atletico in recent years have been without this responsibility, but the level of investment they’ve made is incredible.
“It’s time to say, ‘We’re here, we’re big, we want to be big and we are here to win,'” he concluded.
