Transfer market Was a substitute for Chelsea in Europa League final
Atletico Madrid‘s search for a new left-back seems to have found an early conclusion as Marcos Alonso has agreed to move to the club.
The Chelsea full-back closed out the 2018/19 campaign as a substitute, culminating in a bench role for the Blues’ Europa League triumph against Arsenal, and that has been a key factor in Alonso deciding to accept Atletico‘s offer.
Los Rojiblancos first made contact with the 28-year-old two months ago, but his high salary dampened their hopes of reaching an agreement, despite Alonso‘s willingness to return to his home city of Madrid.
The defender believes that in LaLiga Santander, the only club he would play for is Atletico, regardless of the fact that he came through at Real Madrid. He knows that he will most likely be a starter, too, following the departure of Lucas Hernandez and the expected exit of Filipe Luis.
The problem for Atletico is that they will have to negotiate a fee with Chelsea. Not only is Alonso‘s salary high after his most recent contract extension, but the Blues currently have a transfer ban which would mean that they could not sign a replacement.
Although Alonso has given Atletico the green light, it is not going to be easy to pry him away from Stamford Bridge.
