Iowa Public Television will become Iowa Public Broadcasting Service on Jan. 1, 2020, the organization announced Monday.
“Iowa PBS better represents who we are and how we deliver content in today’s digital age,” IPTV Executive Director and General Manager Molly Phillips said in a news release.
“As Iowans increasingly look to new ways to view information and entertainment, our new name will help ensure they will easily find their favorite locally produced programs as well as PBS programs where and when they want to watch,” she said.
The name change comes after PBS recently announced an update to its national brand. Iowa PBS will adopt the same co-branded logo, which includes a bold color palette and modern, custom typeface across platforms.
The new network name will be adopted across all IPTV channels:
- IPTV KIDS .2 will be Iowa PBS KIDS .2.
- IPTV WORLD .3 will be Iowa PBS WORLD .3.
- IPTV Create .4 will be Iowa PBS Create .4.
“Iowa PBS Foundation will help us better serve our members while preserving our trusted brand and essential mission: to educate, inform, enrich and inspire Iowans,” said Susan Moritz Scharnberg, president of the Iowa Public Television Foundation.
Phillips noted in a news release that programs on the stations will remain the same for Iowa viewers. As to why IPTV will become IPBS, IPTV published on its website that the name is better known around the world as Internet Protocol Television.
When IPTV is typed into search engines, the internet can deliver content that doesn’t relate to the station.
“We want you to find our programming easily and confidently, wherever and whenever you want to watch. This name change will help us accomplish that goal,” according to an FAQ on the station’s page.
The FAQ notes that the name was inevitable to avoid further brand confusion.
“Viewers today watch us on television, on-demand with the PBS Video app, on a growing number of devices and also enjoy our content on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and iowapbs.org,” it reads. “Our future relies on our ability to be where you are watching and to be easily recognized.”
