Transfer Market Has shone with Benfica this season
Even at just 19 years old, Joao Felix is already one of European football’s hottest properties. The teen has impressed at Benfica since January and has scored 19 goals and assisted 11 more in his 42 games this season.
Premier League clubs are interested, as are Juventus, while Atletico Madrid are also dreaming of luring him to the Wanda Metropolitano.
With Antoine Griezmann to depart this summer, the Rojiblancos see Joao Felix as the best candidate to fill the void the Frenchman will leave.
Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata will be Atletico’s starting strike partnership next season, but Felix is seen as the perfect man to provide them with chances.
Signing him won’t be easy though as he is Europe’s biggest up and coming talent. Benfica are aware of the interest in him and, as a result, have set his price at 120 million euros, which may seem excessive for a player who hasn’t yet had an international appearance.
One thing favouring Atletico is that the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, already has a close relationship with Miguel Angel Gil Marin and they have worked together in the past, most notably with Falcao.
Despite Benfica‘s efforts to keep their star, the player is clear that he wants to make a step up this summer. Atletico are considered a good size of club for him to make that next step to in the hopes of launching his career even further.
As things stand, he earns 2.5 million a year in Portugal, which Atleti are able to offer more than, particularly once Griezmann‘s wages have been freed up.
But 120 million euros is a lot, and the Spanish side are only willing to bid 96 million euros.
There are no doubts that the Rojiblancos want the Portuguese, as they once again like the idea of taking a player with room to grow and help him reach his full potential.
