Atletico Madrid PSG want 30 million euros
Atletico Madrid are determined to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani this January, but so far Los Rojiblancos have been unable to strike a deal with the reigning Ligue 1 champions.
The Uruguayan’s contract at PSG expires in June, however the Parisians are not making things easy for Atletico.
According to MARCA’s information, 20 million euros currently separate Cavani from Los Rojiblancos.
Atletico have offered 10m euros for the 32-year-old, who will turn 33 on February 14, while PSG want 30m euros.
Negotiations are expected to be drawn out, with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi having spoken for 30 minutes at the ECA meeting in Paris in Tuesday.
During that discussion, Al-Khelaifi stood by PSG‘s valuation as he argued that the sporting side of the club, led by sporting director Leonardo, consider Cavani to be a key element in the months to come, despite not having started much to this point in the season.
In addition, there are two other elements to note: with that price, PSG would safeguard themselves from potential criticism from their supporters for selling the club’s all-time record goalscorer; and secondly, PSG do not want to strengthen a potential Champions League rival by allowing Cavani to leave on the cheap.
Hence, negotiations will be difficult. For now, Cavani has looked to accelerate things by refusing to travel with the team until his situation is resolved.
The striker is not injured or anything, he simply wants to make sure that the Parisians allow him to leave. Cavani is excited by Diego Simeone‘s project in the Spanish capital and he believes that it is a now or never-type move.
At this point, it is worth remembering that the transfer window closes on Friday, 31 January. Negotiations have been ongoing for a few weeks now, with Atletico‘s leaders and Cavani himself having had a dinner in Paris on January 2 to meet each other.
From that meeting, it became clear that Cavani is the player that Atletico want, while Atletico are the club that Cavani wants as he looks to regain prominence after a difficult few months at the Parc des Princes.
Cavani wants a two-and-a-half-year deal, but this is a move that could come down to the wire.
