Barcelona stretched their lead at the top of LaLiga Santander with a hard-fought away win at Getafe, yet some controversy arose after the hosts had a goal controversially ruled out for a perceived foul on Clement Lenglet.
With Real Madrid losing earlier in the day and much criticism about VAR’s use in both games, Gerard Pique has said that it is in Spanish people’s nature to look for controversy where there is none.
“When there was no VAR it was because there was no VAR,” the defender said after the game.
“When there is, it’s because there is.
“I’ve already said it, but in this country we love controversy and that is why there are programs that live off of controversy, it’s cultural.
“VAR helps the referee and that is the important thing.”
Ernesto Valverde‘s future remains undecided, but Pique has thrown his support behind the Barcelona coach.
“It’s a decision that he will make and he will respect because he is the coach,” Pique added.
“We would be delighted if his decided to continue and he is doing a magnificent job.
“He brings calmness and he is producing results and showing that his way works.”
Barcelona are now five points clear at the top of LaLiga Santander and ten ahead of Real Madrid, but Pique doesn’t believe the title race is over.
“I don’t know if it’s a major blow to LaLiga, in terms of the points between us and the rivals.
“It’s always good to come back from the Christmas break with a win.
“I think it’s years since we did it.”
