Porto have signed Pepe and the centre-back is excited to be back at his former club, where he claims he learned so much that he was able to buck the trend with central defenders at Real Madrid.
The Portugal international joined Los Blancos in 2007 at a time when centre-back signings had been struggling, but he managed to cement a place for himself in the side and to stay there for a decade.
“For all the players who arrived at Real Madrid, for all the centre-backs, it was a graveyard for centre-backs,” he said in an interview with Porto‘s media channels.
“None of them made it.
“But Porto prepared me for this and I was there for 10 years.
“There were many great centre-backs who came, with big names, but they couldn’t stick like I did.”
The move back to Porto sees the player back on the same team as Iker Casillas.
“I’m very happy,” he said of the reunion.
“It might be that this had an influence on the decision.
“When I got here I asked him if he speaks Portuguese, like when he asked me if I spoke Spanish when I arrived at Real Madrid.
“He told me that he understands it, but that he’s still embarrassed.
“I told him he’s better than I was [at Spanish].”
